Exodus 17:12-13 12 Moses’ arms soon became so tired he could no longer hold them up. So Aaron and Hur found a stone for him to sit on. Then they stood on each side of Moses, holding up his hands. So his hands held steady until sunset. 13 As a result, Joshua overwhelmed the army of Amalek in battle.
As I taught a health lesson on the human body once, I can remember my train of thought being derailed. I could no longer think about the 23 students in front of me or the lesson plan I was just following, my mind was flooded with the greatness of our God. Prior to this lesson I’m speaking of, I, like many I’m sure, saw the eyelids and eyebrows as body parts without a real purpose. Much to my surprise, that day my lesson highlighted how the function of the eyebrow is to prevent sweat, water, and other debris from falling down into the eye socket, also important to human communication and facial expression. The eyelids function as protection to the eyes from small particles such as dust, sand or debris from entering and harming the eye. Amazing stuff right!!! As the lesson went on to other body parts, my written objective yielded an unexpected sub-objective for me, nothing God makes is insignificant or without a purpose of importance.
Much like the eyelids and eyebrows, our focus verse involves Aaron, the big brother to Moses as well as one of their companions, Hur, having what some may feel to be a menial role in the battle the Israelites were engaged in. When a group of Amalekites came out to attack the Children of Israel, Moses directed Joshua to gather men to fight. He told him that he would stand on top of the hill holding up the staff of God. Confident in that plan since there were already several convincing instances of triumphant help from God by way of this staff, Joshua set out with a set of warriors for battle. Moses then went up on the hill with Aaron and Hur. You know the story…. Moses would get tired and drop his hands and when this happened the Amalekites would have the advantage but when his hands were raised, the Israelites had the upper hand in the battle. Upon recognizing this, Aaron and Hur were the kind of team players it takes for any company, organization, squad, or unit to function at its maximum capacity, they saw a need and filled it. Rather than diminishing the role they would play in this particular battle, they saw where they could help and did not hesitate, therefore making it possible for the Israelites to come out with their hands lifted as the victors of this battle.
Like Aaron and Hur, embrace your place. Never look at what God has made with eyes of insignificance, never look at the roles He allows you to play as irrelevant because when you do you forsake being a key player in God’s grand scheme of carrying out His will here in the earth. Your role as mother, sister, auntie, middle child, secretary, nurse, assistant, song writer, seamstress, farmer...etc is a required role. I pray that you are encouraged today to see how God seeks to use you in the roles He’s placed you in as a place of honor given by an all-seeing and all-knowing wise God and from this point on vow to Embrace Your Place!!!
Let’s Pray
Father, I often wish for more flashy and fascinating roles. Help me to understand that you started this whole thing we call life with an end goal in mind and placed me here with what I needed to carry out my role in your composition. When my focus is broken by gazing at the roles of my brothers and sisters, remind me that my role is major to you. Amen!!
